South African yard Southern Wind has revealed the latest renderings of its new 35-metre SW108 Hybrid sailing yacht. The new images demonstrate the "elegant, refined and warm" theme that Nauta Design has created on board.
“The clients pushed for a new design, with a different quantity of wood compared with bright panels. They have been very involved with the interior styling," explained Massimo Gino of Nauta Design. The studio has used a calming colour palette and a unique integrated lighting system by PSLab to fulfil the client's brief for light and airy spaces that can be used by the whole family.
The SW108, which was first revealed in the spring of 2021, will be the first to adopt the yard's pioneering new "Smart Custom" design ethos. The build concept aims to offer a high level of bespoke detail while "enriching" the design and construction process, according to the yard.
The first hull in the series for due for delivery later this year, with lamination completed at the end of 2022.
The model will be IMO Tier III compliant thanks to its diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system built on a combination of two generators, a battery bank and electric propulsion motor.
The system can be operated in three different modes. Silent mode will take power from the battery bank for anchoring and manoeuvring in harbours. Meanwhile, the diesel-electric hybrid mode will optimise fuel consumption and recharge the battery while underway. Finally, the sailing mode – Hydrogeneration – will use propellers as a hydro generator while underway.
Alongside Nauta, Farr Yacht Design has worked on the design of SW108 Hybrid. Engineering has been completed in house.
The yacht will feature a fluid layout with plenty of connection between spaces, with an extra-wide beach club on the aft with a garage large enough to hold a five-metre tender.
The builder has described the new model as “the ultimate balance between customisation, innovation, reliability, sustainability and efficiency.”
