Member's logbook: The owner of a 44m CdM explorer on building his dream yacht in Ancona

8 April 2025 • Written by Stewart Campbell

Every month, superyacht owners reveal where they are in the world and share their future plans. This month, BOAT catches up with the owner of an in-build 44-metre Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) to hear how the custom build is progressing – and why he’s planning a two-year global voyage once it’s complete.

Owner of an in-build Cantiere delle Marche explorer

Length: 44m
Year: 2027
Location: Ancona

How’s your new Cantiere delle Marche project coming along?
It is progressing very well. I had the opportunity to see the steel being cut for the hull recently, and that process is now almost complete. I was truly impressed by the structure and the meticulous way in which each piece is assembled after cutting. The level of precision and craftsmanship is remarkable. Most of the design elements
have now been finalised, and it’s exciting to see everything coming together.

Have you made many changes to the design?
Due to the nature of the build being custom, bar the hull’s architectural design, the whole boat is predominantly custom, and therefore I have designed it in conjunction with the yard and Vickers Studio. It has been an eye-opening experience, with an incredible level of attention to detail.

This focus on detail has led to several design developments, ensuring that practicality is seamlessly integrated with elegance. Most of the modifications have been minor refinements, but there have also been a few more significant adjustments to enhance the vessel’s functionality and usability.

When are you expecting to take delivery?
Early 2027.

What sort of interior have you gone for?
I’ve been working with Vickers Studio to create an interior that strikes a balance between classic elegance and contemporary refinement. We have placed a strong emphasis on high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship, particularly in the woodwork and stonemasonry. The aim is to create a timeless yet modern feel, ensuring a luxurious but welcoming environment on board.

How are your cruising plans developing?
Given that it’s an explorer yacht, I plan to venture beyond my usual sailing grounds in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. I’m particularly excited about exploring both the Arctic and the Pacific, embracing the adventure and discovery that an explorer yacht enables. Once the boat has finished her shakedown, she will have a two-year global cruising agenda.

What was it about an explorer like this that attracted you?
For me, the main attraction was the flexibility and freedom it provides to explore. I have always loved being on the ocean, and with a CdM explorer, I believe I will have the capability to venture into new and more remote destinations with confidence. It’s about pushing boundaries and experiencing the world from a different perspective.

Do you know what toys you’ll be packing on board?
Plenty! Explorer canoes, explorer jet skis, 7.2-metre primary RIB, five-metre secondary RIB, sailing dingy, Fliteboard, Seabobs and my classic 1972 250cc XL Honda scrambler.
