WRITTEN FOR OCEAN ALEXANDER

Comparing the interior design options of Ocean Alexander's Puro series

If you attended last year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show, you may have caught a glimpse of Ocean Alexander’s latest creation, the 35P, now christened A Salt Weapon.

This 34.6-metre superyacht marks the debut of the Taiwanese shipyard’s Puro series, introducing an exciting new chapter for the brand. Boasting a striking grey hull and showcasing Ocean Alexander’s first collaboration with acclaimed Italian designer Giorgio Cassetta, the 35P blends contemporary European flair with a brand traditionally associated with American clientele.

Fast forward to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in the autumn, the second hull of the 35P made its debut, this time with a classic white hull. But the difference between these two yachts goes far beyond the hull colour.

Cassetta designed two distinct interior styles for Puro owners to choose from – Nautique and Sereno – each offering a totally different onboard ambience. With the first hull sporting Nautique and the second showcasing Sereno, BOAT takes a closer look at the defining features of each design…

Imagery of the two 35P hulls now on the water reveal two strikingly different interior aesthetics. As Cassetta explains: “Nautique utilises darker tones with classic contrasts, emphasising timeless elegance. Sereno embraces lighter, natural tones that bring warmth and serenity, evoking the feeling of the sea and its surroundings.”

The Nautique style embraces traditional contrasts, which can be seen instantly as you step into the main saloon. A vibrant tan tone dominates, from the rich wood panelling on the walls to the leather furnishings, creating a striking contrast against cream elements, like the carpet, and the dark blue upholstery accents – a classic yachting palette.

Sereno, by contrast, opts for a subtler approach with lighter wood finishes, paired with beige hues and soft touches of cream in the upholstery. The result is a more understated palette that evokes a sense of tranquillity and enhances the yacht’s calming ambience.

In Nautique, tan-toned browns are contrasted strikingly with the cream of the ceiling, bed base and upholstery, reinforcing the theme of bold contrasts.

In Sereno, however, the chairs are upholstered in a single block of beige, maintaining the serene, low-contrast aesthetic. It’s a deliberate balance: more contrast in Nautique, less in Sereno.

“For Nautique, we drew inspiration from the classic American nautical language, a style linked in tradition yet reinterpreted with a modern twist,” Cassetta says. “The materials were carefully chosen to resonate with familiarity while introducing innovative elements.

“Sereno, on the other hand, embodies tranquillity. It’s a design inspired by the serene beauty of sunrise, where the soft morning light reflects off the sea, viewed from the terrace of your villa overlooking the water, offering a sense of calm and connection to nature.”

“Ocean Alexander challenged us to envision a new design language that would both honour its expertise and pave the way for future innovation”

Selecting Cassetta for the design was a bold move for Ocean Alexander. Unlike the brand’s successful Legend, Explorer and Revolution series - each designed by the shipyard’s long-time collaborator Evan K. Marshall - the Puro series represents a shift in vision. With Puro, Ocean Alexander embraced Cassetta’s refined European styling to introduce a fresh perspective.

“In Ocean Alexander’s eyes, we at Cassetta Yacht Designers belong to a very different world to that of its clients.” Cassetta continues. “Ocean Alexander challenged us to envision a new design language that would both honour its expertise and pave the way for future innovation. The brief required a balance, creating something fresh and forward-thinking while maintaining the brand’s unmistakable identity.”

For a shipyard with a firmly established American clientele, this decision has proven to be a resounding success, with four additional 35P models currently under construction, according to BOATPro.

“Ocean Alexander came to us with was a blank piece of paper, asking for our interpretation of their heritage, their more traditional clientele,” Cassetta adds. “That interpretation should be in continuity with the core values of the company, but also somehow disruptive to create a perceivable difference from anything they had done before.

“Ocean Alexander was very respectful; they never twisted our arm into going towards a very specific design detail. If anything, it was a very open and transparent collaboration, with our freedom to create, interpret and propose always fully respected.”
