Building hull number one on speculation, Mangusta has taken a bold approach with the new Mangusta Oceano 52, introducing a range of brand-new design features for the shipyard.
Jointly developed by Overmarine’s Engineering Department and Monaco-based designer Alberto Mancini, the 51.1-metre fast displacement yacht is well underway at Overmarine Group’s Pisa facility, with the steel hull nearing completion and work on the aluminium superstructure underway.
Large yacht mentality
The four-deck model builds on the success of Mangusta’s smaller Oceano yachts, with the new Mangusta Oceano 52 set to become the range's flagship - without replacing the existing Mangusta Oceano 50. Its design stems from extensive research into how Mangusta’s clients use their yachts. “The focus was to create a 60-metre lifestyle in a smaller format, resetting all the constraints of a 500GT,” explains Stefano Arlunno, president of Mangusta Americas. “After more than 30 metal vessels sold since 2017, we created a wish list of important features to be included in the new project in order to check all the boxes.”
To maximise the yacht’s 499GT interior volume while delivering everything an owner desires, Mangusta has embraced a highly adaptable approach, offering up to 12 different layout configurations. “The stairs and lobby stay where they are, but we can shuffle everything else around to create the perfect fit for every owner,” says Arlunno. “For example, the main deck could have two VIP cabins, one full-beam master cabin or a family/dining area. The upper deck could have the owner’s cabin forward and a skylounge aft, or vice versa.”
A key feature of the design is the trendy flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Arlunno says that this is achieved through “the extreme use of structural glass everywhere to an extent that was not possible a few years ago”. Full-height windows on every deck, sliding doors, minimal structural pillars and glass bulwarks on the main and upper decks - a signature of the Oceano line - also create an open, transparent environment. Renderings reveal an interior palette of soft, neutral tones, enhancing the bright and inviting atmosphere that flows into the exterior living spaces.
Owner exclusivity
When it comes to the onboard accommodations, which is for up to 14 guests across seven cabins, the design is very owner-centric. “The main target was to be able to move the master cabin on the upper deck facing forward - like what you would find on a 60-metre yacht - and have at least part of the main deck for two cabins with amazing views and comfort where normally the master cabin is located on a 50-metre vessel,” Arlunno explains. The lower deck accommodates four additional guest cabins, including two doubles and two twins.
The master suite features direct access to a private outdoor deck, where the standout attraction is Mangusta’s signature infinity pool. From this secluded retreat, a staircase leads down to the main deck’s “patio lounge” - a versatile space that can be transformed to suit the owner’s preferences, whether as a gym, relaxation area or entertainment zone.
A first of its kind
The multi-level beach club on the Mangusta Oceano 52 is a standout area. “We designed the aft part of the vessel with an innovative beach area on three levels, totalling a depth of almost nine metres on the main deck and almost five metres on the swim platform,” Arlunno notes.
At the heart of this space is a first-of-its-kind pool, positioned on the swim platform right at the water’s edge that can be fully enclosed to suit the owner’s needs. Fold-down platforms extend the area even further, creating an expansive waterside lounge while ensuring easy access to tenders and toys from the yacht’s garage, which can store a 7.5-metre tender and two jet skis.
Another innovation for a 499GT yacht, designed to maximise exterior space, is the addition of a panoramic crow’s nest atop the wheelhouse deck, offering the owner or guests a private retreat with stunning views from the highest point of the vessel.
