Construction begins on 42m sailing yacht designed by Frank Neubelt

3 July 2024 • Written by Dea Jusufi

Conrad Shipyard has begun construction on a 42-metre sailing yacht known as the C140.

In a series of firsts, the project will mark the first sailing yacht to be built by the yard and will be the first flybridge performance sailing yacht of its size.

The C140 was commissioned in 2022 by an experienced sailing yacht owner and spent a year in development with German Yacht Couture (GYC) and Frank Neubelt Yacht Design (FNYD) before signing the agreement with the Polish shipyard. Technical engineering is owed to Conrad Shipyard in collaboration with Deltamarin.

Designed with performance in mind, the yacht is being built in carbon fibre with retractable pitch propulsion and two high aspect ratio rudders. A single mast and rigging will fly a powerful Code-0/Gennaker sail plan paired with a retractable bow-sprit and a telescopic lifting keel with a maximum draft of six metres that can be reduced to 3.8 metres for accessing shallow harbours and anchorages.

Her profile features a large swim platform that serves as an owner's terrace with direct access from the master suite, while further accommodation sleeps six guests and a crew of six. Dual staircases lead to the main deck where guests will find a shaded exterior lounge that connects to the main saloon to create a single indoor-outdoor space. Large windows run the length of the saloon with two sets of helm stations, one on the sundeck and one on the main deck.

The C140 project also offers storage of two tenders – a 5-metre owner's tender and a smaller one supporting the crew services – while a hybrid propulsion system delivers a cruising speed of 12 knots and a transatlantic range.

Construction is currently underway at the shipyard's facilities in Gdansk and is expected to take up to 24 months. GYC will project manage the build and its technical design.

This follows the delivery of the 44.3-metre Extra Time, whose series won a Design & Innovation Award earlier this year. BOAT International attended the christening ceremony, which saw the owner's daughter smashing the customary champagne and the owner giving a short speech.
