This year’s Richard Earp Award has been presented to Peter Insull, at the Superyacht Show in Barcelona. The prize, given by MYBA and LYBRA in tribute to the well-respected broker who died in 2016, recognises the human qualities that are of enduring value to the industry.
“The award was founded in honour of Richard’s unfailingly gentlemanly conduct, and integrity in dealing with clients,” said Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess and president of the show’s organiser LYBRA. “Nominees are judged with transparency, fair and ethical behaviour, charisma and style.”
Peter Insull, who set up Peter Insull’s Yacht Marketing in 1969, said he was “delighted to be receiving the award”.
“Richard was a very close friend, we miss him terribly, and I’m very pleased to be receiving this with his name attached to it,” he said. “I’m not going to go into a great speech because a lot of people here are yacht brokers - and I often say, don’t try and kid a kidder - but I’ve been very please to be able to contribute to the industry and bring a lot of good people into it.”
The nominees for the award were Jean Marie Recamier and Jonathan Syrett of Camper & Nicholsons International, Dennis Frederiksen and Antoine Larricq of Fraser, Adelheid Chirco of Ocean Independence, Will Christie of Y.CO and Jonathan Beckett himself.
Earp’s daughter and grandson attended the ceremony and Beckett added that “I asked a few people to give me one or two words that characterised Richard, and this is what I got back: a true gentleman; sense of fun; always with a twinkle in his eye and a mischievous grin; a rare breed; always smiling; sharp wit; a wonderful human being and great company.”
