Largest two-master schooner in the world joins the market

A sailing yacht like Athos doesn’t come along every day. At 64 metres, she is the largest two-masted schooner in the world and designed for true high-performance sailing across the globe, and she is now listed for sale with Tim Langmead of Fraser.

Built entirely in aluminium by Dutch yard Holland Jachtbouw, Athos is as capable as she is beautiful. Although she was originally launched in 2010, the yacht for sale has benefitted from a major refit project at Royal Huisman between 2021 and 2022, which saw her stern extended by 1.25 metres.

The addition of a new deckhouse forward of the main mast provided a dedicated space for navigation and secondary steering, freeing up the main deckhouse for exclusive guest use. Additionally, the yacht’s entire interior was refreshed to prioritise socialising, with brighter, more inviting spaces. The owner’s suite was reconfigured to include his-and-hers en suite bathrooms, while the media room was transformed with new upholstery, flooring and decor. On the technical side, the refit granted her more slender booms by Southern Spars and new sails by North Sails.

All this meant that Athos took home the award for Best Refitted Yacht at the World Superyacht Awards 2023, and she is continuously evolving. Just this year, she is undergoing further technical upgrades with the installation of two brand-new engines, two new generators and state-of-the-art bow and stern thrusters.

Athos was built for exploration. She has already circumnavigated the world twice, exploring some spectacular destinations, including Alaska, the Pacific and Norway - a favourite of her captain – and her current adventurous owner is planning to take her to Newfoundland next. “It’s not a yacht to just sit on at anchor in Saint-Tropez,” comments Langmead. “She can really do the long-mile cruises - across the Mediterranean, the States, Panama, the Galápagos, the Pacific and beyond.” Her credentials as a global cruiser are matched by her success as a charter yacht. The current owner first experienced Athos by chartering her for a year and fell in love with her before deciding to buy.

She comes fully equipped with a large selection of water toys and tenders so that guests can enjoy fun on the water and exploring nearby hidden coves. Her inventory includes sailing dinghies, wakeboards, jet skis, paddleboards, fishing gear and diving equipment.

Penned inside and out by Dutch designer André Hoek, Athos boasts a large interior volume of 357GT. “The Hoek masterful design hides a massive living volume compared to many modern classic go-anywhere sailing yachts," Langmead explains. While she is currently rigged for leisurely cruising, her original owner was a keen racing enthusiast. Having competed in the St Barths Bucket multiple times, she has strong regatta potential with the right sailplan.

Her performance is owed to her modern sailing technology, including lightweight carbon materials for increased efficiency and push-button-controlled hydraulic rigging systems. A dynamic positioning system – a rare feature for a sailing yacht, according to Langmead - allows for precise manoeuvring without the need for anchoring, which is an invaluable asset when exploring protected areas, national parks or uncharted waters. Her forward mast is also fitted with a crow’s nest elevator, providing guests with an incredible vantage point to take in the scenery.

Athos’s exterior is a nod to the golden age of sailing, with her hung bow and stern. Her spacious teak deck is perfect for morning yoga sessions or open-air workouts, while the aft dining area, shaded by a canopy, comfortably seats up to 16 guests for al fresco meals.

Inside, the décor embraces a slightly retro aesthetic, with tiger mahogany finishes complemented by white and green marble. The main saloon is a social hub, offering plush seating, a dining area and a sit-up bar, while a separate media room below deck provides the perfect setting for relaxed evenings, with its mini library, TV screen and assortment of games.

Accommodation is generous, with five staterooms on the lower deck that can host up to 10 guests. “She is the largest five-cabin schooner there is,” notes Langmead. “Most sailing boats of this size and nature only have four cabins.” The master suite features its own private office and a personal cockpit above with a fridge and ice maker. Two aft staterooms can be arranged as doubles or twins, while the two forward doubles come with additional Pullman berths, each cabin finished in a slightly different wood to give them unique characters. If needed, the media room’s sofa beds can be used to accommodate two extra guests, increasing the total guest capacity to 12. Crew quarters forward of the lower deck provide space for a team of 10.

Now listed for sale at €43,000,000, Athos represents a rare opportunity to own a modern, high-performance sailing yacht without lengthy build wait times. To find out more information, contact Tim Langmead of Fraser.
