Shark vs. seal: Great white shark clashes with seal in dramatic attack

In a battle between a great white shark and a seal you would expect a shark to come out on top. However, one plucky seal in America seems to have shown a shark who's boss.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy has released footage of the seal fighting for its life against the huge shark off the coast of Cape Cod. Dr Greg Skomal from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries captured the dramatic encounter, while tagging sharks in the area, which has now been watched by more than 500,000 people.

"The escape was incredible to witness," president of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy Cynthia Wigren said. "The seal won the battle but shortly after the same shark successfully consumed a different seal further offshore."

State officials in the area have tagged seven great whites so far this summer. Earlier this week Nauset Light and Coast Guard beaches in Cape Cod were closed after a shark attacked a seal just metres from the shoreline.

Chris Randall, a senior lifeguard, said: “One of the other lifeguards gave me the signal for a shark, at which point I scanned back and saw an explosion of water and blood. The blood was the seal getting snatched by the shark.”

There have been several high profile shark attacks in recent months, including several terrifying shark attacks on boats. Champion surfer Mick Fanning also became an internet sensation after he escaped a shark attack by punching it on the nose during a competition.
