Each week we take a closer look at one of the world’s finest superyachts for charter. This week BOAT steps on board 38.4-metre Calypso, a yacht which can single handedly demonstrate why classic Feadships do remarkably well on the charter market...
When a beloved classic Feadship pops up on the charter market, you know it will be a good one. Calypso is certainly that. Delivered in 1978, she is a luxury yacht for charter which has been bred specifically for entertaining. Originally built for automotive millionaire E. Clayton Gengras, she was later owned by Malcolm Forbes, who hosted royalty and Hollywood icons including Elizabeth Taylor and Henry Kissinger.
A string of refit projects have moved the 38.4-metre yacht with the times and her 70s aesthetics have been beautifully modernised. In 2016, the yacht was almost entirely rebuilt, and, with guidance from Feadship, great care was taken to retain the charter yacht’s original charm while modernising her spaces. 2019 was her most recent refit, which saw major renovations to her plumbing, electrics and some interior adjustments. The hull metal was upgraded too, so she’s now as safe as they come.

Calling to classicists, the main saloon is bright and airy, yet has an old-world feel about it in an elegant, sophisticated kind of way. Natural light floods through Calypso’s oversized windows and light furnishings such as a white L-shaped sofa, upholstered swivel chairs and ivory carpeting create a bright open space. Rich teak wooden cabinetry can be found throughout the yacht too.
Accommodation for up to 11 guests across five cabins comprises a master suite, two cabins with queen beds and a cabin with twin beds plus a Pullman berth. A sixth 'Harry Potter' cabin also adds some charm to the charter yacht and is an option for an additional guest or crew member.
In her most recent refit, Calypso’s forward main dining room was converted into the master cabin, while what was the full-beam lower deck master is now a VIP suite.
Her sun deck also saw a bit of an upgrade during the most recent refit with a new hot tub with teak stairs and a granite barbecue for al fresco dinners under the stars. Accompanying this, the luxury charter yacht has a 12-seat dining table and a 120-inch cinema screen.
Life on board Calypso
Having been created as a thoroughbred entertainer, Calypso's star attraction has always been her brilliant communal spaces and deck space, which makes her perfect for family gatherings and celebrations.
Life on board Calypso is cool and calm and her toybox isn’t brimming with high-octane jet skis and anything too mad that will destroy the peace. And while her classic charm is ever-present, modern touches aren't neglected, for example the luxury yacht for charter is fitted with new oversized Quantum QC1500 Zero Speed stabilisers for additional passenger comfort.
Where will Calypso be cruising?
Calypso is available for charter with Camper and Nicholson with a weekly rate from £80,000. She will be cruising the Americas and the Caribbean this winter season. The yacht is also listed for sale with Camper and Nicholsons.
