Announced during this year's boot Düsseldorf, Sanlorenzo CEO Massimo Perotti revealed that the propulsion system would be installed on the seventh unit in its 50 X-Space series, which is in build and scheduled for a 2027 delivery. The first hull, the 44.3-metre La La Land, was delivered in 2023.
The yacht will be equipped with two high-speed, four-stroke MAN diesel engines and two four-stroke diesel generators designed by Nanni Industries. Sanlorenzo is responsible for adapting the design of the 50 X-Space, including reconfigured diesel fuel tanks that can accommodate methanol and the integration of a new distribution system.
The project forms part of Sanlorenzo's LIFE MYSTIC Project, contributing to the yard's "Road to 2030" strategy, in which Sanlorenzo has pledged to surpass the sustainability targets set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the European Union. The launch of the 50 X-Space will mean that Sanlorenzo will significantly exceed both IMO's 70 per cent reduction target for 2040 and the 55 per cent reduction target set by the EU.
"Innovation has always been one of Sanlorenzo’s core values, and once again, we confirm our role as pioneers in introducing cutting-edge technological solutions," said Perotti. "In this sense, the 50 X-Space project will set a new benchmark for sustainability in yachting, benefitting not only the sector, but beyond."
"The use of alternative fuels, hybrid and battery technologies is a central part of our green transformation," added Mikael Lindner, head of MAN Engines. "We are pleased to be able to contribute further to the reduction of CO2 emissions in this project with the methanol bi-fuel drive, in cooperation with Sanlorenzo and our other partners."
The LIFE MYSTIC Project was launched in June 2024. It involves a total investment of over €4.8 million, with 60 per cent of the funding provided by the European Union.
