The winner of the Young Designer Award 2019 Yihharn Liu discusses life after winning the award, and the opportunities it has presented, in the second episode of her ongoing vlog series.
In September, Liu attended BOAT’s Young Designers' Creative Breakfast at the Monaco Yacht Show, which offers the opportunity for young designers to meet, share their industry experiences, and interrogate established designers for their insight and advice.
Speaking at the breakfast, Liu explains how the Young Designer of the Year award has opened the door to the yachting industry. "Since winning, people know who you are and you are not strangers anymore. You start to get more opportunity, more advice and people say hi to you like a friend. It's wonderful."
Liu won the 2019 Young Designer of the Year competition with her 80 metre motor sailer design concept Manta. The award is sponsored by Dutch superyacht yard Oceanco who offer a three-month internship to the winner, allowing the recipient to gain valuable insight into one of the world's revered shipbuilders.
Earlier on in the year, Liu also attended the World Superyacht Awards in London. Reflecting on the award, she says “I have had more opportunity to visit shipyards, get to know other people in the industry and get advice from yacht masters.”
Liu is currently undertaking her three-month internship at Oceanco in the Netherlands and BOAT International will be catching up with her again later in the year.
Entries for the Young Designer of the Year Award 2020 are now closed. The winner will be announced at the Superyacht Design Festival which is taking place in February in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Click the button below for tickets and more information...
