South African shipyard Southern Wind has announced that the sixth unit in its SW96 sailing yacht series is now under construction. The 29.8-metre model has been commissioned by a North American owner and seasoned sailor who wanted a vessel optimised for "offshore and coastal racing, without compromising comfort". She will make her regatta debut in 2026.
As with previous models, exterior and interiors are owed to Nauta Design, while Farr Yacht Design is responsible for naval architecture. The new unit stands out from sisterships such as Liberty and Nyumba thanks to her dark green metallic hull.
The deck layout, equipment, and onboard systems have been tailored for primary use in the United States, which is where the yacht will be based. This includes a raised saloon configuration and panoramic windows, supplemented by additional hull portlights for brighter interiors, particularly in the main saloon and adjoining television area. Accommodation is across three guest cabins and an "expansive owner's suite" with ample storage. Crew quarters are located aft, including a captain's cabin.
According to the shipyard, the yacht will be constructed to the highest specifications to ensure excellent performance in a wide range of sea and weather conditions. Highlights include a full carbon hull and deck, high-modulus rigging, twin rudders and titanium deck fittings.
Key specs include a light displacement of 58.8 tons and a 3.3 to five-metre draft.
The news comes at a busy time for the yard, with an announcement earlier this week that construction had begun on the third unit in its SW108 series.
