For years, Sirena Yachts has demonstrated the prowess of yacht building in Turkey, offering a broad product range that remains at the forefront of luxury boating. At the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024, the Turkish shipyard made a bold impression with the unveiling of a hybrid version of its 16-metre Sirena 48. BOAT takes a closer look…

The new hybrid version of the Sirena 48 retains the core DNA of its predecessor, preserving Sirena’s signature plumb bow design that maximises interior space. The main deck features a generous saloon with L-shaped seating on the forward port side, a helm station to starboard, and a well-equipped galley and storage area aft. Below deck, the yacht boasts a three-cabin layout, including a master suite aft that stretches the full five-metre beam, a VIP double cabin forward, and a twin cabin amidships to starboard. Expansive outdoor spaces on both the foredeck and aft deck are connected by wide side decks, ensuring easy and safe movement for guests of all ages.

The key difference from the regular version is the replacement of the open-air flybridge with a coupe-style coach roof, adorned with glass and solar panels. These solar panels extend the yacht's range when running on electric power alone. The coupe’s refined aesthetic is so striking that Sirena anticipates high demand from owners opting for conventional propulsion systems as well, according to the shipyard.

But what truly distinguishes the hybrid model in the small-to-mid-sized yacht market is its eco-friendly propulsion system. The coupe-style variant boasts a high-performance serial hybrid powertrain, enabling silent cruising with zero exhaust emissions, and lighter electric motors and batteries increase the yacht's range. Not only does the coupe style offer a sportier-looking exterior profile, but the streamlined design creates less windage, allowing for more efficient cruising. Additionally, the coupe-style roof incorporates skylights, bringing natural light into the saloon below, which is the social hub of the boat.

Powered by twin 213kW E-Motion electric motors, the Sirena 48 Coupe Hybrid achieves a top speed of 14 knots. In its silent electric mode, the yacht can run on energy from its large battery bank, allowing it to travel up to 30 nautical miles before the variable speed generators activate. This enables the yacht to depart the harbour or anchor with minimal noise and zero emissions, offering a quiet and eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel systems.

For extended range and higher speeds, the two generators kick in to produce the electricity required to power the boat and recharge the batteries, operating far more efficiently than a traditional diesel engine. Since the generators are independent of the propellers, they significantly reduce noise and vibration, creating an ultra-quiet cruising experience. Upon reaching your destination, the fully recharged batteries allow for an overnight stay at anchor in complete silence. The generators won’t need to be restarted for more than eight hours, even with air-conditioning, the galley and AV systems running. The hybrid system offers significant efficiency, reducing fuel consumption by up to 35 per cent while also lowering maintenance costs by 10-15 per cent, depending on how the yacht is used.

At the heart of Sirena's yacht ownership philosophy is choice, offering a variety of interior and exterior layouts, styling options and equipment levels. The hybrid propulsion system is now available across all models, while the coupe design can also be applied to yachts with conventional power systems.
