Rolex Sailing Regattas Confirmed for September 2020

30 June 2020 • Written by Olivia Michel

Both the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Rolex Swan Cup will take place in September 2020, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) confirmed.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, held in partnership with the International Maxi Association, will take place on August 30 to September 4. Meanwhile, the Rolex Swan Cup, hosted in partnership with Nautor's Swan shipyard, will take place from September 6 to 13.

The format of both events will be altered to allow the implementation of various social distancing measures due to the coronavirus pandemic. These include a digital registration procedure and the skippers' briefing and prize giving taking place outside with limited crew attending.

Social events will also be curtailed in order to ensure the safety of those present. The traditional owners' dinners held at the YCCS will take place with the necessary social distancing procedures, however crew parties will not be permitted.

The regattas will also take place in a shortened format. A two-day gap has also been inserted between the regattas to reduce the amount of boats and competitors on site at one time.

CCS commodore, Riccardo Bonadeo, said: "We waited cautiously until the end of June to carefully consider the various factors and once again, by confirming the traditional regattas in September, we wish to reaffirm our determination to face this challenge. Of course, we will continue to assess the situation and adapt our sporting events to ensure maximum safety.

"We are all in the same boat and collaborating like a real crew will be fundamental for the safety of all and the consequent success of the events."

The YCCS has also confirmed that a number of other events will be taking place this season, including the Coppa Europa Smeralda 888 on July 3 and the traditional YCCS Members' Championship on August 2.
