W Maldives

The Maldives is renowned as a destination for getting off-grid, but guests at W can take things a step further with a two-day Robinson Crusoe experience on the private island of Gaathafushi. It’s a tech-free zone (apart from a single resort phone) but you don’t need to be quite as enterprising as Crusoe: a private chef will pop over to set up a candlelit dinner for two.

Chiva-Som is ideal for those who like a carrot-and-stick approach to detoxing – you will be chastised if you have a mobile phone, Kindle, laptop or camera in public areas. Svelte celebs – including Kate Moss, Eva Mendes and Elle Macpherson – swear by its use of traditional Thai therapies and Zen atmosphere.

Sitting in the Seychelles’ Outer Islands, 400km south-west of Mahé, this emerald speck has limited Wi-Fi and phone signal. Instead of talking to friends back home, commune with the giant tortoises that roam its tropical paths or the spinner dolphins that frolic off its white shores.

Swap phone reception for flag signals (each cottage comes with a flag to call staff) on this 46-hectare tropical island in the heart of the Grenadine chain. If yoga, watersports and the Jean-Michel Cousteau Diving Caribbean centre aren’t enough to keep you distracted, there is a 4,500-bottle fine wine cellar to work your way through.

Captain James Cook climbed the verdant peak of this 1,013-hectare island, now a national park, to chart a route through the maze of the Great Barrier Reef. Nowadays you still won’t be able to use Google Maps in this signal-free location, but you can enjoy access to some of the world’s best dive sites.
