The power of prints: why this luxury beachwear brand is more than meets the eye

3 October 2024 • Written by Hannah Rankine for LOVE BRAND & Co.

Founded in 2010 by husband-and-wife duo Oliver and Rose Tomalin, LOVE BRAND & Co. is a menswear label born from the couple’s deep connection to island life after years spent in the Bahamas. The brand’s philosophy centres around “laid-back luxury”, offering high-quality clothing designed for coastal life. But the brand offers more than just stylish beachwear; from day one, it has remained dedicated to environmental stewardship, using eco-friendly fabrics in every piece and supporting wildlife conservation through meaningful partnerships.

“We are a proud member of ‘1% for the Planet’,” Oliver explains. “This summer, we have been supporting the Ionian Environment Foundation (part of Conservation Collective) and its project to save endangered dolphins and monk seals. Our last donation funded new camera equipment, which they desperately needed to carry out their recording study.”

The B-Corp-certified brand does this through the power of prints. Each print carries a deeper meaning, highlighting an endangered species while maintaining the brand’s signature laid-back luxury style. “Customers love 'getting the print' and finding the animals that are almost lost in the pattern, as they are almost lost in the wild,” Oliver notes.

Saving manta rays through the Explorations Company

LOVE BRAND & Co. has partnered with luxury adventure travel specialist, Explorations Company, to launch a limited-edition collection that shines a spotlight on the endangered manta rays of the Seychelles. Over the past 75 years, manta ray populations have sharply declined due to by-catch and targeted fishing, pushing these gentle creatures towards extinction. However, the Seychelles provide a sanctuary where manta rays are protected, offering an environment for research and conservation.

This exclusive swim shorts collection features two designs - one in print and one in embroidery - each aimed at raising awareness about manta ray conservation and supporting critical research conducted by the Seychelles Manta Ray Project (SMRP). Through SMRP’s efforts, over 470 manta rays have been photo-identified, yielding essential data about their habitats and behaviours.

The embroidered Staniel swim shorts feature turquoise rays gliding through pastel blue waters, while the printed Staniel swim shorts display a pattern of emerald and white manta rays swirling together.

Raising awareness about sea turtle safety with SJ Villas

With the ‘Turtle Light’ print, LOVE BRAND & Co. has joined forces with British boutique luxury villa agency SJ Villas, highlighting the plight of endangered sea turtles in Barbados. Inspired by a mutual passion for family holidays and a shared respect for nature, this collaboration raises awareness about the dangers artificial light poses to sea turtle hatchlings. On nesting beaches, artificial light can disorient baby turtles, leading them away from the ocean and putting their survival at risk.

Through this partnership, LOVE BRAND & Co. supports the Barbados Environmental Conservation Trust and the work of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project, which monitors nesting beaches. This project is one of the longest-running conservation programmes for critically endangered hawksbill turtles in the world.

The ‘Turtle Light’ print, in vibrant summer yellows, captures the magic of nature as turtle hatchlings make their first, unsteady steps toward the sea. With over 600 nesting hawksbill turtles visiting Barbados each year, it is home to the largest population in the insular Caribbean, making this conservation effort all the more vital.

Coral restoration and saving the Arabian oryx with Mandarin Oriental Dubai

Working with Mandarin Oriental in Jumeira, Dubai, LOVE BRAND & Co. has designed two exclusive prints available at the resort’s poolside store, Kind by M.O. These prints tell the story of two conservation efforts: coral restoration and the rewilding of the Arabian oryx, underscoring the hotel’s dedication to sustainability and wildlife protection in the UAE.

In 2022, Mandarin Oriental partnered with Freestyle Divers and AZRAQ to launch an artificial reef shaped like the hotel’s fan logo. This four-metre structure, sunk off the coast of Fujairah in Dibba Bay, aims to foster a new underwater ecosystem, attracting a variety of marine species and supporting coral regeneration.

Meanwhile, the Arabian oryx, a species integral to Arabian culture, was on the brink of extinction just 50 years ago. Extinct in the wild by the early 1970s, the species was saved through efforts in zoos and private reserves, leading to its reintroduction into the wild starting in 1980.

The collection symbolises two important conservation stories supported by the resort and can only be found at Kind by M.O. at the Mandarin Oriental Dubai.

Supporting endangered seahorses and orcas with the Marbella Club

Through a shared love for island life and family travel, LOVE BRAND & Co. has partnered with the renowned Mediterranean hideaway, the Marbella Club Hotel, to create an exclusive collection that celebrates the beauty of marine ecosystems while supporting conservation efforts. The collaboration highlights the Marbella Club’s commitment to preserving endangered seahorses in the region.

The hotel proudly supports Aula Del Mar’s seahorse conservation project, which serves as the inspiration behind LOVE BRAND & Co.’s exclusive print designs for the Marbella Club. One of these, the ‘Seahorses & Orcas’ print, presents a creative pattern where orcas seem to leap from the waves, hidden within the silhouettes of seahorses. This intricate design showcases the diversity of marine life in the Mediterranean and the surprising variety of species that inhabit this vital ecosystem. These exclusive prints are a testament to the ongoing efforts of both the Marbella Club and LOVE BRAND & Co. to protect marine life and ensure a sustainable future for these endangered species.
