Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the award-winning Marina de Vilamoura in Portugal's popular Algarve region has taken a bold step forward with the launch of Nova Marina - a sister facility designed exclusively for superyachts. Responding to the rising demand from the luxury yachting community, Nova Marina is expected to enhance the destination's appeal to high-net-worth individuals and create a premier hub for luxury yachts. Superyacht berthing facilities
Boasting state-of-the-art berthing facilities designed to cater to the needs of superyachts, the marina features three pontoons with 68 berths accommodating vessels between 20 and 40 metres, with a maximum depth of four metres. Each berth is equipped with all the necessary amenities, including individual wastewater pump-out systems, charging points for electric boats and advanced systems for remote management of water and electricity consumption.
Looking ahead, the marina is actively exploring innovative solutions such as desalination systems and photovoltaic energy generation, aiming to deliver more sustainable and efficient water and electricity supplies. Guests can enjoy connectivity with high-speed Wi-Fi, while round-the-clock security and assistance ensure peace of mind. Adding to its premium services, the marina’s dedicated concierge team is on hand to arrange anything from activities, accommodation, transport and restaurant bookings.
Lifestyle amenities and services
There is also a range of amenities designed to provide a vibrant lifestyle for owners, crew and visitors alike. Guests can enjoy a variety of dining and entertainment options, including cafés, restaurants, waterside bars and a nightclub. For everyday essentials and leisure shopping, the marina is home to newsagents, supermarkets, banks, general stores and an array of traditional handicraft shops and luxury boutiques.
Practical facilities include a fuel jetty and pump-out station, as well as a car park equipped with electric vehicle charging points. The marina also serves as a hub for sports and adventure, offering boat charters, big-game fishing, scuba diving and rentals for Jet Skis and bicycles, while sailing enthusiasts can take advantage of the marina’s dedicated sailing club.
For yacht maintenance and storage, the marina features a well-equipped shipyard with a slipway, crane services, a 60-ton travel hoist and additional lifts with capacities of six and two tons. Forklifts, boat stacks and a do-it-yourself work area are also available, along with towing, hull cleaning, water drainage and locker rental services. There is also dry storage for up to 200 boats and a conveniently located chandlery near reception.
What to do in the surrounding area
The area surrounding Nova Marina is full of natural beauty, leisure and cultural experiences. Visitors can enjoy three kilometres of golden sands across two pristine beaches, each offering unique attractions. Rocha Baixinha Nascente Beach features four restaurants, making it a perfect spot to dine by the sea, while Vilamoura Beach is equipped with shaded sunbeds and offers activities like kayaking and paddleboarding, complemented by a restaurant and bar.
For golf enthusiasts, Vilamoura is a dream destination, boasting five internationally renowned golf courses. Among these is the Victoria Course, famous for hosting the European Tour Portugal Masters and the Golf World Cup. Beyond leisure, the area pulsates with vibrant local life, offering a rich cultural scene. History lovers can explore the Cerro da Vila Museum and Archaeological Site, where a 5,000-year timeline of human history provides a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Environmental initiatives
Nova Marina upholds the same high environmental and quality standards as its sister marina, which has held dual certifications under the ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 standards since 2002 and 2004, respectively. These internationally recognised certifications translate to rigorous monitoring practices aimed at minimising environmental impact while continuously improving the marina’s services and ensuring customer satisfaction. Notably, this certification extends beyond marina management to encompass the oversight of Rocha Baixinha Beach and Vilamoura Beach.
The marina has ambitious goals for 2025, with water conservation a key focus. While it already employs efficient wastewater treatment systems and supports initiatives like the reuse of treated wastewater, by 2026, Vilamoura’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (ETAR) will supply non-potable water for irrigation. This will benefit the marina’s surrounding green spaces and align operations with the Algarve’s water efficiency goals.
"We have transformed a visionary concept into an attractive destination that represents innovation, sophistication and a profound commitment to nautical excellence," says Isolete Correia, CEO of Marina de Vilamoura, Nova Marina and Vilamoura. "From the beginning, we understood that a marina is not just about boats and berths, but also about an experience that connects people with the sea, fostering relationships and offering a broader vision of nautical culture. With the new marina, Vilamoura reaffirms its position as a centre of excellence on the European scene."
