LIFE ON BOARD THE WORLD, Residences at Sea
Hear from residents of The World on what makes life on board this 196-metre residential ship so unique
Welcome aboard The World, a 196-metre luxury residential ship boasting highly sought-after, privately-owned apartments that circumnavigates the globe annually. With a dedicated team that caters to your every request and whim, and a vast array of exclusive onboard activities, life on board The World offers the ultimate luxury travel experience.
However, what truly sets The World apart are the individualised experiences its residents enjoy. BOAT brings you first-hand insights from residents, shedding light on the unique travel lifestyle experienced on board The World.
Your home away from home
Although it may resemble a cruise ship from the outside, your first steps on board reveal a vessel that looks and feels more like a luxurious private home. Residents own their homes on board and collectively own the ship. They have the freedom to decorate and refurbish their residence, creating the ultimate second, and sometimes third, home at sea. Public spaces like the lobby, dubbed by some as The World's living room, are comfortable and cozy. Recently, it served as the perfect vantage point to enjoy local performances by students of New York City’s The Juilliard School and 'The Nutcracker' by principal dancers from Miami City Ballet.
“In addition to being the world’s largest private yacht, we are unique in being the only residential ship sailing the world,” says a resident of The World. “It would be extremely difficult to replicate the 20-plus years of experience in providing unique itineraries, highly personalised service and dealing with the myriad logistical challenges of visiting ports all over the world, including those in remote locations who rarely see passenger ships.”

Personalised service
The attentive staff on board The World go above and beyond. Residents on board have described the dedicated crew as “warm”, “professional” and “part of our extended family”, whilst familiarising themselves with the personal preferences of each resident. From the sommelier remembering each resident’s favourite wine to accompany a meal to the housekeeper ensuring the freezer is stocked with the family's favourite ice cream flavours; The World is the ultimate personalised luxury experience.
Once-in-a-lifetime experiences
Each experience on board The World is exclusive and tailor-made. The ship's crew breathes life into destinations with extraordinary events, from witnessing Melanesia's Pentecost land divers executing a centuries-old tradition of leaping from wooden platforms with vine-wrapped ankles to sailing the record-breaking voyage through Canada's Northwest Passage, accompanied by a watchful mother polar bear and her cub on a nearby ice floe.
Other unique adventures have included playing golf in the Antarctic snow, retracing Sir Ernest Shackleton’s historic steps, and stopping off Africa's west coast so that residents could swim across the equator parallel to a pod of pilot whales nearby.
One resident cited their most memorable moment as “visiting the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu and spending mornings enjoying cultural performances by the locals, singing nursery rhymes with the most adorable children and spending the afternoons snorkelling in the most gorgeous blue waters teeming with tropical fish”. Whilst another resident recalled being “the first person on board to spot Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and their elf daughter on an ice floe in the Lemaire Channel in the Antarctica Peninsula while photographing the spectacular scenery”!

Meaningful cultural experiences
Residents on board The World can immerse themselves in a wealth of activities, excursions, lectures and experiences, choosing to partake in as much or as little as they desire. The extensive onboard programming, which serves to bring the destination alive, is not found in individual yacht ownership or traditional superyacht experiences and includes esteemed speakers, guest chefs, winemakers and the renowned Nobel Laureate Lecture Series. The World Spa and Fitness Centre rivals any on land and its hiking, biking, snorkelling and diving programmes support this active community and its focus on health and wellness.
Last year, The World hosted the esteemed Mr. Lech Wałęsa, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former president of Poland, in a unique, private engagement with residents. The ship has also welcomed acclaimed chefs like Silvio Nickol of Palais Coburg in Vienna and representatives from renowned champagne houses and winemakers.
A highlight of one resident was “a four-day wine overland trip in Chile, visiting the country’s top producers, highlighted by a private all-afternoon local barbecue luncheon at the home of the founder and proprietor of Montes Alpha Winery”.
The World recently unveiled its highly anticipated 2024 journey, promising residents and guests a full year of once-in-a-lifetime adventures and cultural experiences.
