The superyacht furniture collection made from plantation-grown teak

27 September 2024 • Written by Hannah Rankine

While the harsh environmental impact of teak is common knowledge in the superyacht industry, finding a solution has been Summit Furniture’s commitment since its inception in 1979. For over 45 years, the US furniture manufacturer has built beautiful, practical pieces responsibly, leading the industry with its premium plantation-grown teak production. Today, Summit Furniture is globally recognised for its award-winning designs, which can be found on some of the world's most celebrated superyachts, residences and resorts. One particular collection is the Sundeck line, penned by a world-renowned designer that has swiftly become a favourite for superyacht decks. BOAT finds out why…

A versatile product portfolio

Whether it's seating options, tables or accessories, the Sundeck collection features all the core features that dress a superyacht deck. The range comprises a variety of seating options, from upright chairs perfect for dining to high bar stools and more reclined loungers for relaxing or sunbathing. Complementary pieces like sturdy trays, dining tables and coffee tables ensure that food and drink service match the yacht’s aesthetic. What sets the Sundeck collection apart is how it merges aesthetics with functionality. Built to endure the elements of the marine environment with their polished marine-grade stainless-steel fittings, the pieces are versatile, stowable and stackable.

A responsible approach to teak

A commitment to the environment is at the heart of Summit Furniture’s ethos. The brand prides itself in offering a more sustainable solution to teak with its plantation-grown production method. Based in Indonesia, the plant has been supplying Summit Furniture since the 1980s, which is closely monitored by the government to ensure that supply is secure, and both the environment and local economy benefit from its activity. The trees have a rich lifecycle from the time they are saplings through to maturity and harvest, so for every tree harvested, two or more are planted in its place, beginning the generational growth cycle once again. The result of this plantation is a furniture brand that is proud to be fully certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), giving clients peace of mind that their furniture has been built and sourced responsibly.

The work of a world-renowned designer

Summit Furniture partners with some of the world’s most renowned designers. The Sundeck collection is the brainchild of the UK-based yacht designer John Munford. After training at the London College of Furniture, Munford developed a fascination for furniture and interior design, focusing on movable, foldable pieces designed specifically for their intended environment. Over the many years of working in architecture and marine design, Munford’s name gradually became more and more known internationally, with his talents showcased on some of the world’s most celebrated superyachts, including both classic and modern motor and sailing yachts, and the iconic J class America’s Cup racers. In his Sundeck collection, the understated design and focus on comfort showcase his ability to merge traditional yachting aesthetics with modern superyacht styling.

With showrooms spanning America and Europe in Monterey, Los Angeles, Palm Beach, London and Monaco, designers, owners and the wider industry can explore the Summit collections firsthand or online on Summit Furniture's website.
