Environmental initiatives
Situated adjacent to the pristine Abaco National Park spanning 8,000 hectares of untouched forest, Habacoa is designed with great care and responsibility to the pristine environment of South Abaco. Leveraging the natural elevation of the island, Habacoa addresses the risk of storms that inflict the Bahamas head on. Cliffs as high as 27 metres provide awe-inspiring vistas while ensuring Habacoa is protected from rising sea levels for the next 100 years and beyond. Hurricane-proof infrastructure has been integrated into the project plans, along with underground utilities and construction built to the strictest standards.
With the site’s location on the leeward side, unique topography and advanced construction methods, Habacoa could withstand a direct hit from the worst hurricane on record with minor damage expected. By harnessing the Bahamas’ abundant sunshine, Habacoa will adopt solar energy to supply up to 30 per cent of its energy needs. What’s more, Habacoa is set to be the first development in the Bahamas to rely on rainwater harvesting as the source of potable water for residents and guests. The marina complex aspires to achieve Blue Flag certification upon completion and establish the Marina as one of the most environmentally sustainable in the world.
