This year Barcelona-based refit yard MB92 celebrates 25 years as one of the world’s largest refit, repair and maintenance facilities dedicated to luxury yachts.
Founded in 1992, MB92 began life in a 25,200 square metre space in Port Vell catering to yachts of less than 25 metres LOA. Fast forward to the present day and the success of MB92 has seen it expand to a vast 124,000 square metre site in the Port of Barcelona allowing the yard to refit around 100 yachts with an average length of 70 metres each year.
Of course, as one of the most experienced shipyards in the world, this is just the tip of iceberg and MB92’s focus remains on innovation and investment to provide clients with a professional, high quality experience. From winter 2018 clients will be able to take advantage of a new 4,000 ton Shiplift that will allow the dry-docking of yachts up to 105 metres along with a hard-standing area with space for 12 yachts. This is in addition to the existing dry docks and repair quays large enough for yachts up to 200 metres which are equipped with a 150 ton Travelift and 2,000 ton Syncrolift.
“We’ve moved with the market,” explains MB92’s commercial director Henk Dreijer. “We have a significant amount of loyal clients who started off with small boats and as their tastes grew we expanded to meet them. 70-80 metre yachts are now more popular than ever and thanks to the new Shiplift we will be able to tailor our services to meet the needs of more owners than ever before.”
Occupying a strategic stop-off point for yachts transferring between the Mediterranean and Caribbean means the 100-strong MB92 team has a truly global outlook and, thanks to over two decades of experience, understands the importance of getting yachts back out on the ocean on time, on budget and in perfect condition.
Taking a personal approach to each new project, MB92 is able to offer a full package service including project management, logistics, technical processes, a global warranty and full customer care. The yard also works with a network of over 900 world-class subcontractors, both locally and internationally, allowing clients to request services spanning everything from mechanics and engineering to interior design and carpentry in one simple step while MB92 takes care of the details.
As for the next 25 years? The future looks bright, says Dreijer. “We are very proud of our reputation and the way to maintain that is to continue growing and keep up with increasingly sophisticated technologies,” he says. “We are investing in our project management teams, stimulating in-house training programmes for our subcontractors and looking at new processes to increase productivity and eco-friendly maintenance so we can continue to ensure the same quality offered by new build yards.”
